Brunch Review: Common Man Coffee Roasters - Singapore

My friend from Jakarta was in town and she insisted me to have brunch with her, not dinner, not lunch, BRUNCH. While I'm myself quite a fan of brunch, for me the relationship between girls and brunch is still a mystery, it's intense yet cheerful, and it's a love hate (the calories D:).

Then, my boyfriend and I decided to take her to Common Man Coffee Roasters, which is owned by the not-so-common Harry Grover, the man behind Forty Hands, and The Spa Esprit Group. The place is nicely located at 22 Martin Road, nearby Boat Quay. Despite the look from the outside, the interior is rather humble, and I have to say that the seats available there, almost could not keep up with the crowds who kept on coming in. Alright, with no further ado, let's start the review!

Organic Eggs Benedict
Tender braised ox cheeks, two poached organic eggs & chive hollandaise,
with artisanal sourdough toast
S$24

Okay, you see that egg benedicts up there? See how it was nicely done and just right? I LOVED it.
I could say that this dish was a very decent dish for brunch, if I don't have the wet and soggy sourdough bread underneath the ox cheeks and eggs. I like my sourdough crispy and moist, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The ox cheeks were not bad though, it was soft and tender, the texture was just nice. Might order this again next time (for the eggs and ox cheeks).

Turkish Common Man Breakfast
Phyllo-wrapped soft-boiled organic eggs, crispy feta, fresh cucumber & tomatoes,
olives & hummus, with pita bread
S$25

My friend ordered the Turkish Common Man Breakfast, and she didn't really like it. For me, the soft boiled egg was yummy (I mean, you can never go wrong with egg dish, right?), it was wrapped with something that looks like that-crispy-thing-from-dimsum-dish. Fascinating. Also, the crispy feta was interesting and the salad was fresh. I quite like the idea of this dish, but I certainly didn't fancy the pita bread, although the texture was quite okay, the taste was really bland.

Common Man Burger
100% ground rib-eye, provolone, grilled tomatoes, caramelised onions &
pickled guindilla on a fluffy brioche bun, served with fries
S$28

This Common Man Burger was simple and normal, the meat was nice, the bread was good. Overall, it was a proper burger with good ol' french fries. However, I feel it kind of lacks of imagination and needs a bit more kick.

Caffe Mocha
Chocolate-flavored caffe latte

This place is actually famous for their coffee, and eventhough I'm not a fan of coffee, I have to admit that the coffee they serve is quite good. I like how they made my Caffe Mocha, the sweetness was precisely what I wanted. I'm not sure of how much my Caffe Mocha cost, because they don't have it in their menu (I just straight up told the waiter I wanted Caffe Mocha), and I threw away the receipt, guess it should be around S$4-S$6.

In conclusion, I quite like the place and area for a nice coffee time. However, seriously, I have lots of complain with their bread. Also, if you take a look at my second picture, the seats and tables which are available for 1 person guest are very small and thin, it was very uncomfortable and you can't put a lot of stuff on your table. Hope they can improve on these things!
