Hey Yolks! How was your Valentine's day? I'm sure you guys enjoy it with your loved ones. :D Mine was quite random and full of unplanned activities, though. And I was supposed to post something either on one day before Valentine or on the day itself, but unfortunately there was some technical issues going on behind the scene.
As I came for an early dinner that day, it was not so crowded as you can see in the picture. However, by the time we were about to leave, streams of diners, started filling the restaurant pretty fast, mostly were the working people who just got back from work.
Grilled Baby Corn
Charcoaled Organic Baby Corn, with Cotija-Chili Mayo
S$9
The first course was Grilled Baby Corn, it was a nicely executed and simple dish, but I think it was quite pricey. The corns were nicely charred with smoky flavor, and served with yummy chili mayo sauce. It was good but nothing really special.
Huitlacoche Donuts
Smoked Corn Mushroom Donuts, Cotija-Chili Mayo
S$9
This Huitlacoche Donuts was the highlight of the night. Huitlacoche (pronounce: wee-tlah-koh-cheh), is a type of fungus that grows naturally on the ears of corn, something like corn truffle. The donuts taste amazing, it was interesting, simple, yet impressive. It's nothing like I've ever tried before, which is not much to my surprise, because this was my first time eating huitlacoche. I could come back here just to eat the freaking donuts. Oh, and you have to eat it together with the dipping sauce, and then perfecto!
Pan Artesanal
Artisan Corn Bread, Pumpkin Seed, Jalapeno Butter
S$7
The corn bread was a let down, we ordered this with high hopes and the bread turn out to be so so. It was very normal, but on the other hand, I still like the butter, it was not bad. Overall, I don't think I will ever order this dish again, since I was so dissapointed with it.
Vuelve a la Vida
Prawn, Octopus, Snapper, Clam Tomato Cocktail Sauce, Avocado
S$19
I'm a fan of Gazpacho (chilled raw vegetable soup), Tomato Gazpacho especially. Vuelve a la Vida is made from different kind of seafood in one bowl served with chilled tomato cocktail sauce. Except the octopus, everything else was raw (ceviche). The dish reminds me a lot of gazpacho, but with more oomph and some seafood in it. It was delicious, sour with a hint of spiciness, gotta love it.
Rice Pilaf with Puree of Chiles and Herbs
S$9
I'm not sure on how to react to this, I think the Mexican Green Rice was ordinary, it was just rice cooked with some herbs and onion, topped with baked cheese. There was nothing special and the flavor was not really strong for my taste. This was just not my bowl of rice.
Mole Negro
Free Range Chicken, Oaxaca Black Mole, Dry Fruits, White Rice
S$32
Hmmm, how to say this.. If you're Chinese and you celebrate Chinese New Year, you must know that one dried fruit candy that taste very sour and sweet at the same time. The flavor of the black thick sauce was exactly like that. Since I don't like dried fruits, I don't fancy Mole Negro, reminds me too much of Chinese New Year. Also, you have to eat the dish with the rice to balance out the mole, the rice was soft and fluffy, normal, but fluffy.
Milhojas de Cajeta
Crispy Crepes, Mexican Milk Caramel, Coffee, Almond
S$14
Aah, the picture brings back good memories that I had with the dessert. A very delightful and playful dessert, the crepes were minis and crispy, it was full of layers of texture. The flavor was not too heavy. Loved it. I don't mind coming back just to eat the crepes and the Huitlacoche donuts.
My overall experience there was very good, the person who served us is a Mexican, he was attentive and patiently explain everything that we asked. I would come back again in the future, and the restaurant is now on my list of recommendation if someone ask me where to go to have a bite and drink.
